One little excerpt...
To get straight to the point, I love writing. I swear it's in my soul. Somewhere... Anyway, back to what I was saying. I certainly don't talk like I write, but that's just because my mouth moves too fast for my own good. It's embarrassing sometimes how much I slur my words, and of course, this only happens around people I'm trying to impress. Go figure.
Funny thing about my love of writing is that I have the hardest time making myself write about myself. Sure, I'll sit there and think up how to begin it, how it'll progress and maybe even how it'll end. But it becomes the most ardorous and impossible task to make myself actually get up to type it and/or write it. And with how often I write stories or scenes you'd think it'd be easy. Maybe I try to get too poetic (though I loathe poetry) when I write about myself. At least I find my past journal entries amusing. I'd never let the public see a lot of my entries, but I find them terribly funny. How silly I was, how stupid I was, how much I've grown beyond that...indeed, I feel better all the time. Except when I read those entries where I can now see the dreadful mistake about to happen...no, those I hate myself for. And deep down, I think I resolve to fix that and never fall into that type of thing ever again.
Generally, I succeed at this. I've met different types of jerkish guys each time around, but I don't fall for their ploys again. I just find a new type to get fooled by. I just hope in time I'll have run into them all and won't be able to have the wool pulled over my eyes anymore. (Who thought up that phrase? From what I know of wool, it's quite thick, itchy to boot, and you'd notice it. But the phrase usually applies to situations where the act is done subtly and it's almost too late before the victim notices they've got that itchy stuff blinding them.)
Anyways, here's what actually prompted this thought. (And a long explanation with a short scene I wrote will follow. Ignore if you wish, but I find it interesting. Though...I find lots of "boring" things interesting. A subject for another day.)
First, we'll need backstory. It's for an online rpg (role-playing game, for anyone who's ignorant of this. Don't worry, no hazing for not knowing. I didn't know for a while either.) A few of my friends and I started it, a yahoo group to be exact, and it's called Parneth. We all seem to like the fantasy realm and this is a creation all our own. Four girls and two guys, one of whom joined later and one girl who later left. The older of the boys (in the group at least, I don't know his age) is the only person I haven't met...shoot, nevermind. I haven't actually physically met one of the girls either. Either way, it's a place with Elves, Desert Elves, Humans, no fairies yet (thank goodness, they get obnoxious most of the time) but also flourishing with demons.
These are no run of the mill demons, oh no. They're my precious babies. (Despite the fact that they're strong enough to rip me limb from limb and a lot of them are ten times my age.) Piper championed the humans and sorta the desert elves, the Elves are handled by letterladyz, and the lovely demons? Oh, they're mine. I have goblins, ogres (which were sorta created by default by Piper) along with orcs, and then the animal demons. Well, the doppelganger too. Largely, they hide and deny their existance. It worked pretty well and everyone's forgotten them.
Tony helped with the creation story, with me finishing it up. I gave them the gods of creation, with the younger sister of the trio of gods creating the demons. She of course, gets the short of the stick after combing the traits of her brother's creations and then her poor creations get cursed. The goblins and orcs were already in hiding, being lesser creations, but then the animal demons have to hide, along with the doppelganger. I have three kinds of animal demons (I only intended on two, but letterladyz made the third) the Okami (wolf demons), Kitsune (fox demons), and Neko (cat demons). Yes, there are all the Japanese word for the specie but I like them that way. They have three forms:
One: their animal one. They look perfectly animal-like, aside from some having odd colorations).
Two: their human-like one. The Neko's have elf-like ears while the Okami and Kitsune have human ears. This is where they stand out the most. Their hair is their fur color and that can prove problematic sometimes. They also have a set of animal ears on top of their head, which they hide in their hair while around humans or elves. Okami are unusually tall and muscular, with their lifestyle making them strong and their height setting them sometimes as tall as 6'5" and above. Big babies, indeed. The Kitsune are smaller and more slightly built, staying around 5'6" to 5'8" as maybe their tallest. The Neko are around average human height, staying with the Kitsune in that respect.
Three: their true demonic form. The curse is witnessed here. They have a "demonic" name which if said aloud and with other small requirements turns them into something horrifically unnatural. Desdemona (the demon goddess) bemoaned their fate when Anthos (humans/elves) and Animos (animals) put this curse on her creations. They have a human-like body, but are covered in fur, bear a tail and animal ears and retain their animal head. They're very much like an online furry or werewolf. Just...scary. No cutesy lil' things prancing around in cute outfits, oh no. It eats at their soul to do this, they're outcast from communities. It gives them enormous surges of strength, but it's not something you should do often. Or ever, really. Forbidden, it is.
Now, with most of the backstory covered, I can focus on the Okami. They're a very proud and honorable race, with this dictating most of their lifestyle. Sure, they'll go to war-like states a lot faster than the Kitsune or Neko, but they do it honorably.
The character whose scene I'm totally obsessed with right now (which follows) is an Okami, Fang. He's stalwart, cold to some, and very, very honorable. Of course...there's a mar on his family name. To be exact, Mar is a mar on their name. He has five older brothers, but the brother directly above him is Mar. He's a smaller Okami, but has always had a temper. (Mar's a brown wolf and Fang is white, by the way.) Mar got messed up by a passing sorcerer and gave into the third form...big, bad dishonor there.
Fang was taken for a werewolf (because he spoke while in wolf form to some villagers mad at him for hunting lifestock) and was being hauled off to the capital by some peasents, but got his lucky break as they passed a poor duke who was a werewolf and in hiding. Duke Tadran, the unlucky werewolf, took Fang in to shut him up and out of pity. Fang swore to repay the debt and would protect Tadran with his life. Of course, a servant of Tadran ends up getting bitten by Tadran (turning into a werewolf) and Fang feels awful about it. He did his best to prevent it, but did keep her from getting eaten alive by the now-werewolf-Tadran. And now Fang has two charges, Tamra the servant, and Tadran the duke. He's been managing them rather well at the castle, but when Tadran gets kidnapped by a Kitsune (being paid by a doppelganger, I know, getting confusing). He had been out getting flowers with Tamra (she insisted on finding something to cheer up the Duke and Fang was more than willing to go outside, remember, wolf at heart). He's more than upset when he discovers this and gets the head guard of the castle (old friend of the duke's) to send out some men with them.
Along the way, they run into trouble. Specifically, Mar. Their chat starts out pleasent and ends with Mar demanding one of the humans as a playtoy, or else they don't get to pass. Fang can't stand for this and sends the humans on ahead, while he will deal with them. Of course, Fang tries to hold Mar off, but finds himself bleeding, nearly broken and with no other option to stop Mar but to turn into the forbidden form as well. He does it, overpowers Mar, and saves the day. Unfortunately, he knows he's ruined any hope of honor after this...and here is the scene. Hope the backstory didn't bore you...
Burning...the sensation came to Fang once more. He winced as it began to spread from his chest to his shoulder. He tried to ignore it, but put a hand to it and squeezed in hopes of somehow easing the heat induced pain. There was no doubt in his mind as to its origin, that much he was sure of. Mar's temper had worsened much faster after his transformation, was this part of the cause?
As the burning began to subside a new pain came on, that of guilt. It weighed heavily on him, the memories and sensations flashing through his mind. He had no remorse for his course of action, only that things had progressed so badly. No more would he be pure and spotless, no. Now he would be outcast and downtrodden. Okami-kind would watch him carefully, warily. He no longer held any honor.
Would life amoung the humans satisfy him? Or would the fleeting lives of the constant bipeds bore him? Fang barely restrained a sigh, life was forever changed. He could never go back. Never again.
Viola! Short, but I like it...anyhoo. That was my thought. Hope you liked it.
